Death at The Kentucky Derby

As I am sure you have heard, after crossing the finish line in last Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, a young filly named Eight Belles collapsed when both her front ankles snapped. She was euthanized in the dirt where she lay, the latest victim of the dirty business of thoroughbred racing.
Help PETA prevent further suffering in the racing industry by taking action today.
Eight Belles’ death is yet another reminder that horses are raced when they are so young that their bones have not properly formed, and they are often raced on surfaces that are too hard for their bones—like the hard track at Churchill Downs. Eight Belles’ jockey whipped her mercilessly as she came down the final stretch. Trainers, owners, and jockeys are driven by the desire to make money, and the horses suffer terribly for it.
PETA is calling on the racing industry to suspend the jockey and trainer; bar the owner from racing at the track; stop racing horses on hard tracks and switch to softer, synthetic surfaces to spare horses’ bones and joints; permanently ban the use of whips; and, at the very least, stop using young horses who are so susceptible to these types of horrific injuries. Help PETA call for an end to cruelty that masquerades as sport.
Although Eight Belles’ death—like Barbaro’s death before hers—made headlines, countless lesser-known horses suffer similar fates away from the public eye. These horses’ broken legs and battered bodies are hidden from public view. Most racehorses end up broken down or cast off or are sent to Europe for slaughter.
Please take action today to help prevent cruelty in the racing industry by asking the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority to institute sweeping reforms that would stop needless, preventable suffering.

Tragedy Strikes

A car plowed into a crowd that had gathered to watch a drag race on a suburban road early Saturday, killing seven people and injuring at least four, police said.
A witness said two cars in the illegal street race sped past just before a car without its lights on came up behind the crowd of about 50.
“There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible,” said Crystal Gaines, 27, whose father was among the dead.
Gaines said she grabbed her child but could not help her father, William Gaines Sr., 61.
“He wasn’t breathing, he wasn’t moving,” she said. “His body was in pieces.”
A white sedan hit people standing on the side of Route 210 around 3:40 a.m., Prince George’s County Police Cpl. Clinton Copeland said, but it wasn’t clear whether that was one of the cars involved in the race. A tractor-trailer that came by shortly afterward may also have struck someone on the road as it tried to avoid the crash, he said.
“It’s probably one of the worst scenes I’ve seen,” Copeland said. “This is a situation that could have been avoided, and it’s a very tragic situation.” Tornado Terror

5 Dead in Illinois Mall Shooting
There was another mall shooting in America today. This time 5 women were shot dead at a Lane Bryant store at a strip mall in Tinley, Park Illinois.
And to make things worse the person or persons responsible remain at large.

Nothing Shocks Us Anymore
Two mentally disabled women were strapped with explosives Friday and sent into busy Baghdad markets, where they were blown up by remote control.
1 of the 2 Bomb killed at least 98 people and wounded more than 200 at two popular pet markets on the holiest day of the week for Muslims. Authorities believe the women were unaware of plans to detonate the explosives.
“By targeting innocent Iraqis, they show their true demonic character,” said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, spokesman for the Multi-National Division-Baghdad. “They care nothing for the Iraqi people; they want to subjugate them and forcefully create a greater Islamic sharia state,” he said, referring to Islamic law.

Four Presidents of the U.S.A. have been assisinated. Abe Lincoln in 1865, James Garfield in 1881, William Mckinley in 1901 and John Kennedy in 1963. Although Garfield and McKinley were in fact unintentionally killed by their doctors after they were shot.

Poor Matthew!
The Austrian Supreme Court ruled today that a chimpanzee cannot be declared a person. Animal rights group wanted to adopt Matthew Hiasl Pan (featured above) after the shelter where Matthew has lived for 25 years is going bankrupt, threatening to leave him homeless. Under Austrian law, only a person can receive personal gifts. Personhood will ensure that he isn’t sold outside Austria. Click here to read more of the story.

Stay Away from Escalators!
A man fell several stories to his death inside a Hollywood shopping mall when he tried to slide down the banister of an escalator. Not only did the man attempt this dumb stunt, but he was also drinking “quite a bit” when he did it.
The accident happened at the Hollywood & Highland shopping complex. Wow, that must of been a big fall. Talk about rug burn—I can’t even begin to imagine what the rubber did to his ass. Sucks!
